Welcome to The University of Iowa Bassoon Studio. Currently the basoon studio is comprised of 4 graduate students and 9 undergraduate students. Many performing opportunities are available for bassoonists at The University of Iowa.   Qualified bassoon majors may participate in The University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Symphony Band, Concert Band, University Band, Center for New Music, Double Reed Ensemble, and many others.

The University of Iowa is frequently visited by distinguished musicians offering masterclasses, recitals and workshops.   Guests include: Michael McCraw (Baroque bassoon - Indiana University), Arthur Weisberg (Indiana University), Kim Walker (international soloist and recording artist), William Ludwig (Indiana University), Eric Stomberg (University of Kansas and Interlochen), Albie Micklich (Arizona State), Daniel Matsukawa (Philadelphia Orchestra) Donald MacCourt (New York Woodwind Quintet), Jeff Lyman (University of Michigan), and Walter Thompson the creator of the "sound painting" a combination of improvisation, acting and written music.

The University of Iowa offers financial assistance in the form of merit scholarships, assistantships, and fellowships. Several part-time professional orchestras in our area, such as the Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Dubuque, Quad City, and Ottumwa symphonies are excellent sources of additional musical experience and income.

Michael O'Hanlan realized that he enjoyed teaching music far more than he enjoyed working in business. He comes to the University of Iowa with the goal of becoming a college professor. He finds Iowans "disconcertingly nice" after living far too many years in the Washington, DC area. He is currently in the Professional Improvement Program. Contrary to the saying that "every path begins with the first step", he finds it begins with learning to make a good reed (and is still learning), that will let him play in tune (Quixotic dream? Pray not!), and many more bassoon related steps. Each step of the path involves growing into more fluency on the instrument and learning not to "play the bassoon", rather to let the bassoon express the music inside of him. For the time being, that, a metronome and a tuner are keeping him more than busy! He finds growing musically here a far better use of time, energy and talent compared to sitting alone in a cubicle working on spreadsheets for a large company.
