Even as a child, Coelho watched, and listened in awe. How desperately he wanted to sing through the bassoon, despite it being so tall. The professor at the Tatuí Conservatory said fourteen. That was the minimum age of a bassoonist. So Coelho waited, the patient wait of brewing passion until he could observe other students’ lessons. But passivity does not quell a musician’s fire, and idleness does not satisfy impatience. He took his older cousin’s bassoon, playing in secrecy and practicing what he heard in classes. He met his first bassoon teacher Clóvis Franco, principal bassoonist with the State of São Paulo Military Police Band when he turned ten. The same artistic drive sent Coelho to a mechanical high school. He graduated as a certified lathe operator and found similar joys in engineering in reed making.
